Profile & Legacies Summary
???? - 1806
Biography
- Will of James Gordon of St Luke Chelsea [made in 1804] proved 03/04/1806. In the will he said he owned an estate in Tobago called Goldsborough with upwards of 180 enslaved people ['negroes'], his sole property subject only to a mortgage for £9,900 held by Daniel Henry Rucker: he also had one half of the mercantile business of Gordon and Rucker. Previously he had been in business under James Gordon & Co., from whose books it appeared that Mr Kenneth Tod owed him a great deal of money which he had little hope of recovering. He left Goldsborough in trust to be disposed of, and left an annuity of £800 p.a. to his wife Sarah. His residuary heirs were his children Sarah and James Alexander Gordon at 21. He was he said about to make a trip to the West Indies. In a codicil of 1806 he recorded the death of his wife and the termination of his partnership with D.H. Rucker.
