Samuel Bean

1732 - 1815

Biography

Samuel Bean 'of London' was owner of Castle Hill sugar estate in St Thomas-in-the-East, Jamaica, in 1775. Samuel Bean of Lawrence Pountney Lane was bankrupt in 1772, the commission renewed in 1802. The Samuel Bean who died at Richmond in 1815 and who was an assignee of half the Richmond estate in Demerara was the same man as the bankrupt London merchant, and LBS has in turn inferred that the latter was the owner of Castle Hill.

  1. In the will of Samuel Bean of Richmond Surrey proved 03/02/1815, he said that he had lent his second son Charles Bean between £8,000 and £10,000 to purchase Richmond Plantation in Demerara, and that Charles Bean had assigned half the plantation to him to secure the debt. He asked his son to remit to his [Charles'] mother Martha the interest on this loan. No other assets were specified in the will.

  2. Samuel Bean of Richmond was buried at St Peter, Petersham 09/01/1815.
