Biography

Matthew Kelly and John Flynn were both deceased owners of Enfield estate in St George, Jamaica, 1791-1794.

  1. The will of Matthew Kelly of St. George, planter was proved in Jamaica 10/04/1783. He bequeathed half of his estate to his uncle Peter Kelly in Ireland, and the other half to John Flynn of Jamaica. They are to give £10 per year to his "negro slave" named Behavoir and to manumit her. To his goddaughter, Margaret Kelly, a child of colour, daughter of William Kelly (Matthew's cousin - the son of the above Peter Kelly), £40 Jamaican currency and one enslaved person.

  2. Matthew Kelly of St George, planter. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1783. Slave-ownership at probate: 20 of whom 14 were listed as male and 6 as female. 2 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £2615.73 Jamaican currency of which £1740 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £11.27 currency cash, £529.44 currency debts and £0 currency plate.
