Biography

Resident slave-owner in Jamaica with heirs in Scotland.

  1. Aug. [1809] At Jamaica [death of] James Grant esq. of Pleasant Hill near Spanish Town.

  2. Will of James Grant planter of St John proved 08/07/1817. The will is not fully dated. He left his Pleasant Hill coffee mountain to his brother John Grant Captain in the British Army and his sister Margaret Carmichael wife of Alexander Carmichael of the town of Torres in Scotland, after leaving £20 p.a to an enslaved woman on Water Mount estate named Cretia or Aretia Hamilton, money for whose manumission he also provided.
