Thomas Smith of Hadley

???? - 1789

Biography

Mortgagee of Providence plantation (in which he was identified as of Hadley) and probably also of Pearl Estate (in which he was shown only as Thomas Smith), both in Grenada. He was probably the man whose will was proved of Evesham in 1789.

  1. The Smith family of Hadley were the children of Thomas Smith, a London merchant (d. 1744), and Culling Horne, daughter of the governor of Bombay. The eldest son, Thomas, died of Evesham leaving two daughters. His brother Culling was made the first Smith (later Eardley) baronet in 1802.

Mortgage for Securing £9000 and interest. On 30/07/1772 Edmund and Thomas Proudfoot sell [presumably in fact mortgaged] Thomas Smith 'Flavigny, Mount Loria and Bellair, now generally known as the Pearl Estate.' LBS has inferred this to have been Thomas Smith of Hadley, who was mortgagee of another estate and enslaved people in Grenada at this time, Providence.
