Elder son and co-heir of James Laing of Streatham (q.v.), in whose will he appeared as William John Laing. His brother Allan Stewart Laing appeared in the compensation records as trustee and executor of the will under which John William Laing was a beneficiary.

Member of the Baillie of Dochfour family who had numerous mercantile connections in the West Indies. The compensation for Baillie's Bacolet in Grenada was awarded to the trustees of her marriage settlement. Grand-daughter of Colin Roy Campbell of Glenmure. Apparently a victim of the quack doctor John St John Lang of Harley Street in 1830.

An inventory and valuation of enslaved persons at Williamsfield settlement, St Elisabeth parish, Jamaica, 1814. 3. An inventory of animals at Windsor Estate, St Elizabeth parish, Jamaica, 1814. 4. A cover note outlining the contents of the document.
