Born 1792, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. Died Tobago 1859. Memorial plaque in St Andrews Church, Scarborough, Tobago: To the Memory of THE HONORABLE PETER TAIT who died the 9th July 1859 Age 64. Mr Tait was a Native of Dumfriesshire in Scotland, but for many Years a valued Member of this Community, to which he rendered lasting obligations. But his memory is chiefly endeared to his adopted Country for his extensive Charities and active Benevolence. Virtues which survive him in the Testamentary provision which he made for the poor of every religious denomination in the Colony.
Peter Tait served on a Committee of the Legislative Assembly for famine relief in Ireland and Scotland in 1847. He was elected to the Committee of the Tobago Branch Anti-Slavery Society in 1849 and became a Member of the Legislative Council of Tobago in 1857.
