Biography

Slave-owner in Jamaica, dying in Scotland c. 1818. Alexander Burt was shown as the co-owner with Alexander Heron of an estate named Alexandria in Hanover which was under trusteeship in 1802-1803.

  1. Will of Alexander Burt of Cleish, KInrosshire [late of Jamaica] [made in 1816] proved 28/12/1818. In the will he left to 'a certain mulatto man named William Burt of Jamaica' whom he had previously manumitted £100 sterling and an enslaved man named James; and to a certain mulatto woman named Elsey of Jamaica £20 sterling. He left to 'these two mulattoes' his settlement known by the name of Prospect Hill in Westmorland. He left monetary legacies totalling £850 to relatives. His residuary legatee was his nephew David Walker.
