The founder of the Payne dynasty of slave-owners who rebased to Bedfordshire in the following generation. The ODNB entry for his grandson Sir Peter Payne (q.v.) shows him dying in 1746; the History of Parliament entry for Sir Peter Payne gives his death-date as 1744; most genealogical sources indicate 1738; Vere Langford Oliver showed a burial record on St Kitts 22/12/1744.
