Dr William Millar of Antigua and Walkinshaw

???? - 1780

Biography

Brother and executor of Andrew Millar (1707-1768), the London bookseller and publisher with an entry in the ODNB whose will was made and proved in 1768 and specified his brother William as of Antigua. To date no PCC will has been found for William Millar himself, who appears among the executors in the will of John Bannister of Cavendish Square made 06/07/1773 as 'Wm Millar, late of Antigua, Dr of Physic, now of Walkinshaw, Scotland, Esq.'. Genealogical material associates him with Millar's estate on Antigua.

  1. Dr William Millar of Walkinshaw was the subject of a letter from Dr Alexander Stevenson to Dr William Cullen dated 14/01/1780 that mentioned Mr A. Millar, the nephew of Dr William Millar, and said inter alia: 'Last Summer he [Dr William Millar] became anxious about the state of his West Indian possessions, which [anxiety] was increased by the unexpected return of his manager & produced an evident bad effect upon his health.' The letter gave his age in early 1780 as 'three or four years above 60.' He died later in 1780.

The dates listed below have different categories as denoted by the letters in the brackets following each date. Here is a key to explain those letter codes:

  • SD - Association Start Date
  • SY - Association Start Year
  • EA - Earliest Known Association
  • ED - Association End Date
  • EY - Association End Year
  • LA - Latest Known Association
Previous owner

This is speculative. Genealogical sources associate Millar's with Dr William Millar, but the transmission of Millar to Alexander Millar has not been traced, and the identification of Alexander Millar the owner of Millar's in the Slave Registers with Mr A. Millar the nephew of Dr William Millar in 1780 remains tentative.
