Biography

Second son of Sir Thomas Modyford (1st Bart, died 1679) and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Lewin Palmer of Devonshire. Succeeded his brother Sir Thomas Modyford, 2nd Bart, who died a month after his father. Married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Norton. Lived at Angells, Jamaica. Died c. 1686.

Charles Modyford of St John, baronet. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1688. Slave-ownership at probate: 242 of whom 118 were listed as male and 124 as female. 72 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £5648.1 Jamaican currency of which £3245 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £9.49 currency cash, £64.48 currency debts and £275.9 currency plate.
