Son and co-heir of James Brown of Gattonside and his wife Ann nee Mellor, daughter of Abner Mellor (all q.v.).
Abner William, son of James and Anne Brown, born 30/09/1800, baptised 13/08/1801 in St Andrew, Jamaica.
James and Ann and their children moved to Britain c. 1803 following the death of Ann's father Abner. James wrote his will in 1809 while living at Bangholme Bower near Edinburgh. By 1813, Ann had died and James had moved to Gattonside House near Melrose. James died in 1816. His residuary legatees were his children, share and share alike.

Abner William Brown of Abberley, Worcestershire, married Maria Sarah Dangerfield 30/06/1824 at Old Church, St Pancras, London. In 1841 he was living at the Vicarage in Pitchley, Kettering, Northampstonshire, with his wife and two daughters, Maria (age 14) and Anne I. (age 7). He was at the same address in 1851. In 1861 he was at the Vicarage in Gretton, Northamptonshire and at the same address in 1871.
Abner William Brown, vicar of this parish, was buried 20/09/1872 in Gretton. The will of Rev. Abner William Brown who died 15/09/1872 at Gretton was rpoved by Rev. Serocold Clarke Skeels of Gretton, clerk, and John Dangerfield of 26 Craven Street, Charing Cross, solicitor, two of the executors, 03/10/1872. Effects under £5,000. Rescorn in May 1873, effects under £6,000.
