Biography

Son of Richard Bate of Barbados and Foston, Derbyshire, and his wife Sarah nee Newton.

  1. Inherited Woodland estate in St George, Barbados, from his mother Sarah. Sold the estate to George Newport of London in 1723 for £5,000.

  2. Presumably inherited Foston Hall in Derbyshire from his father Richard Bate, who had bought it in 1679.

  3. William Bate Esquire was described as of Foston, Derbyshire, brother and heir at law of Raynes Bate deceased late of Foston and the Island of Barbados in 1720. William Bate brought several Chancery cases in the 1720s and 1730s.

  4. William Bate married Arabella Chambers in Scropton, Derbyshire, 20/03/1718. They had four children baptised in Scropton: Sarah (1719), Arabella (1720), Chambers (1724) and Margaret Sophia Penelope (1726).

All my family pictures to my son Chambers Bate.

To my dear wife Anne Claverina all my messuages, lands and hereditaments in Suffolk lately purchased by me and all my messuages, lands and tenements in Derbyshire which I have purchased since intermarriage with Arabella my first wife.

Also to my wife all the rest of my goods, chattels and personal estate. She to be my sole executrix.
