Josiah Walley

???? - 1818

Biography

London merchant, partner in a predecessor firm of Wilkinson & Gavillier until 1805. He was a dissenter, buried at Bunhill Fields.

  1. Will of Josiah Walley of Hackney Middlesex [made in 1815] proved 16/11/1818. After monetary legacies of several hundred pounds to two clergymen and charities, and £500 to his executor Nathaniel Warner Bromley, he left a leasehold in Chester called Whippatty Butts [?] at Taporley and the income on £10,000 in 3% reduced bank annuities to his sister Mary wife of Thomas Newton of Taporley ironmonger and grocer for life, and then the principal to their four children Mary Williams the wife of Josiah Williams; Esther Newton; Samuel Newton; and Alice Ann Newton. He left his wife the income on £10,000 in 3% consolidated bank annuities, with the principal after her death again to go to the children of Thomas and Mary Newton, and on a further £1000 in bank stock, the principal to go to his nephew Samuel on her death.

  2. In the will of Ann Walley of St Thomas Square, she noted that all the children of Thomas and Mary Newton were dead, and that she possibly therefore had absolute title to the £10,000 willed to her. To fulfil her husband's intentions, she left the £10,000 to the children of Mary Williams and of Esther Walley nee Newton the wife of Samuel Walley.
