Thomas Carter in 1774 purchased two annuities each of £50 p.a., one for the lives of his daughter Martha and William Clinton and the other for the lives of his daughter Martha and Augusta Clinton, secured on the property including enslaved people of John Abel Ward (q.v.) on Nevis, as one of a large group of similar annuitants. William Henry Clinton (1769-1846) and Augusta Clinton (1765-1852) were his grand-children, the children of Harriott nee Carter (1746-1772) and Sir Henry Clinton. William Henry Clinton was MP for three different constituencies between 1794 and 1829; Augusta Clinton eloped with the Jamaica slave-owner Henry Dawkins (q.v. under Henry Dawkins III). Thomas Carter was also party to a deed of 1774 among 23 purchasers of annuities from Augustus Gwyn (q.v.) secured on the Mount Charles estate and Middleton Pen in Jamaica.
