1802 - 18th May 1869
Reputed son of Thomas Paterson of Downe Castle, Jamaica, and beneficiary of £1000 sterling in Thomas Paterson's will. Stated to be a "poor mason" in Glasgow in 1834.
Robert Patterson, "free mulatto son of Thomas Patterson, a white man and Margaret a negro aged 8 years" was baptised in Trelawny 22/09/1810.
Robert Paterson and Isabella Fulton, both in Gorbals, were married there 12/12/1829. They had three children baptised in the Gorbals: Isabella (1830), Thomas (1832) and Robert (1834) and a fourth baptised in Glasgow: Mary Ann (1836).
In 1841 Robert Paterson, age 30, mason, born Jamaica, was living on Robertson Lane, Glasgow, with Isabella Paterson age 30, Robert Paterson age 5, Mary Ann Paterson age 5 and Ann Fulton age 20. Robert Paterson, born Trelawny, Jamaica, mason, age 48, was living at 26 Robertson Lane, Glasgow, in the census of 1851 with his wife Isabella and son Robert. He was at 110 Renfield Street, still a mason, age 58 in the census of 1861, again with his wife Isabella and son Robert.
Robert Paterson, mason (journeyman), married to Isabella Fulton (illegitimate), age 66, son of Thomas Paterson, coffee planter (deceased, reputed father) and Margaret Campbell, housekeeper, died 18/05/1869 at 140 Renfield Street, Glasgow. The informant was his son Robert. In 1881, Isabella Paterson was an inmate in the Combination Poorhouse at Upper Strathearn, Auchterarder, Perthshire (her place of birth given as Kilmadock). She died in Auchterarder 13/10/1887.
