Dame Barbara Brotherson (née Seton)

???? - 1835

Biography

Scion of a prominent Jacobite family. In 1783 she married Lewis Brotherson jun. in London: the marriage appears somewhat anomalous give their respective social standings. After the death of her brother Archibald Seton of the Hon. East India Co. in 1818, Barbara Brotherson came into the family's Scottish estates. 'Archibald Seaton' is shown on the 1753 Samuel Baker map of St Kitts marking an estate in Christ Church Nichola Town: this man was conceivably connected with Barbara Brotherson nee Seton but no such connection has been traced by LBS to date.

  1. Will of Dame Barbara Brotherson Seton widow of Touch Stirlingshire was proved 23/03/1835. The will is silent on slave-property.

Sources

Barbara Seton's grandfather was Archibald Seton (d. 1726), but nothing in the family history of the Setons of Touch suggests a connection with St Kitts other than Barbara Seton's marriage to Lewis Brotherson, Sir Bruce Gordon Seton, The House of Seton: a study of lost causes (Glasgow: Lindsay and Macleod, 1941) Vol. II.
