William Norris of Bedford Row and Bromham, Wiltshire

???? - 1794

Biography

Mortgagee of 'slave-property' on Nevis, having lent £7000 to William Johnson secured on his unnamed estate believed by LBS to have been Zetland. William Norris was connected by marriage with Rev. Richard Neate (q.v.): in 1834 Mary Ann Norris described Charles [Robert] Neate, son of Rev. Richard Neate, as her cousin.

  1. Will of William Norris gentleman of [Nonsuch] Bromham Wiltshire with 5 codicils proved 12/05/1794. In the will the mortgage he held loomed large, accounting for about half of his monetary legacies to his children, and he was at pains to detail the payment mechanisms, by bills of exchange or consignments of sugar through Neave & Co. in London (and apparently Dennistouns of Glasgow) of the interest payments, which he specified at £550 p.a. In a codicil made in 1792 he specified the estate as late Mr Johnson's now Dr Archibald's. He left real estate in the West Country and in Carey Street in London among his sons.
