James Butler Harris appeared among the Bristol planters and merchants who were signatories (all via J. Herring under special power) of the 1782 petition to the King calling for the defence of the West India islands. He is shown in unsourced secondary sources as owner of Sunbury (also known as Branker) estate in Barbados and as selling the plantation (and the enslaved people attached to it) to John Henry Barrow in 1776.
