David Barry

Biography

David Barry was the owner of the Soubise estate.

  1. Administration of the will of David Barry planter of St Patrick Grenada was granted 14/12/1809 to his daughter Elizabeth Johnstone. In his will, made 12/06/1794 with a codicil of 18/08/1795, he instructed that his property be sold and the proceeds remitted to Charles Snell Chauncy and Robert Lang of London, to fund an annuity of £150 p.a to his wife Margaret with the residual estate among his seven daughters. If his wife remarried the annuity was to cease and she was to receive £600 currency and no more. In the codicil he expressed the wish that 'my heirs and executors may be relieved from the burthen of Soubize estate, which I hope will be the case as Mr Hankey is guilty of a breach of our contract by withdrawing possession of Duval's [?] land which had for fifteen years past been deemed a part of Soubize and cultivated as such besides from what has already past in this country I don't see the possibility of that agreement benign carried into execution.' He left his wife Margaret 'the mulatto girl Madelene for her own use', and in case of his wife's death he gave Madelene to his eldest daughter Betsey. The will was attested 09/11/1795 by which time David Barry was dead.
