Alexander Nisbett

Biography

Medical practitioner and slave-owner of Tobago, where he died in 1823. He was one of the executors of John Reid of Falmouth and Tobago (q.v.) and in that capacity corresponded in 1820-1821 with Reid's brother Alexander Reid of Easter Elchies (q.v.).

  1. Will of Alexander Nisbett, practitioner of Physic of Tobago made 30/01/1823 and proved 03/05/1823. He left his household effects, his house and land known as Harmony Hall with five named enslaved people (Rose Juba and her daughters Mary and Harriet, Philip and Jim) to his 'housekeeper' Margaret Kent and her two children Charlotte and William 'of whom I am the reputed father', with remainder to his kinsman Lieutenant James Reid of HM 45th Regiment of Foot, son of James Reid of Newington Edinburgh. He left his gold watch and seals to his daughter Charlotte and £50 currency and his wearing apparel to another reputed son Charles, and £300 to his [the testator's] sister at Newbigging, Musselburgh. His residuary heir was Lt. James Reid.

  1. PROB 11/1671/16. Harmony Hall does not appear in the compensation records but Margaret Kent (then inn Edinburgh) claimed and was awarded compensation or four enslaved people in Scarborough, presumably survivors or descendants of the five enslaved people she inherited in 1823.
