Biography

  1. Richard Hillary was the son of John Hillary Esq of Birkrigg, a family of great antiquity. His two older brothers died unmarried and he succeeded to his father’s Yorkshire and Jamaica estates in 1763. In 1764 he married Hannah, daughter of George Wynne Esq by Elizabeth Lascelles of Yorkshire, by whom he had Richard (q.v.), William, late baronet, and Mary.

  2. Richard Hillary was a West India merchant and enslaver who belonged to a Quaker family from Wensleydale and set up a partnership in Liverpool trading with the West Indies where he owned plantations and enslaved people.
