Biography

John Edward Cumberbatch, 'free coloured man', son of Lawrence Trent Cumberbatch (1762-1833) and Elizabeth Cumberbatch ('free mulatto'). Baptised in St Peter, Barbados, 25/01/1807. He married Julia Belgrave, daughter of John Thomas Belgrave in Barbados in 1823. Wrote his will 11/08/1838 (signed by mark) leaving hs property to his wife Julia and thereafter to his four children John Belgrave, George Edward, Thomas Trent and Eliza Caroline. Executors Francis Cumberbatch, Richard Cumberbatch and Julia Cumberbatch.

John Edward and his brother Richard were bequeathed £200 Jamaican currency and the house where they currently resided in Speightstown in the will of their father.
