Biography

London lawyer, son of James William Freshfield (q.v.) whom he predeceased; both men are included in the collective entry in the ODNB for the Freshfield family. James William Freshfield jun. was awarded compensation as co-trustee on 3 groups of claims, one for the Vreesen Hoop estate in British Guiana under the marriage settlement of John Turing Ferrier and Adriana Jonas, two under the marriage settlement of A.G. Milne and Dorothea Milne for the Beausejour and Limlair estates on Grenada; and three as trustee for what appears to be a group of City financiers who had lent money to and taken security from the failing London merchant firm of Manning and Anderdon over two estates - Spooners and Priddies Morne - on St Kitts.

  1. Will of James William Freshfield Gentleman of New Bank Buildings proved 09/06/1857.

  2. 'It was in his capacity as trustee of a marriage settlement that, in 1827, James William Freshfield, with his fellow trustee, one Alexander Baillie, acquired 15 slaves for the estate of Linlair [sic] on the Island of Grenada, in the West Indies.' Both father and son appeared in the compensation records as awardees for Limlair as trustees of the marriage settlement of Alexander George Milne [senior] and Dorothea Span; both men were partners in 1827.
