William Hopetoun Carnegie, 8th Earl of Northesk

William Hopetoun Carnegie, 8th Earl of Northesk and son of Admiral William Carnegie (the 7th Earl) and Mary Ricketts, and brother of John Jervis Carnegie (q.v.), with whom he was awarded half the compensation for Canaan estate in Westmoreland Jamaica as trustee for Viscount St Vincent.

1. William Hopetoun Carnegie born 16/10/1794; succeeded his father 28/05/1831. His mother was the daughter of William Henry Ricketts and Mary Jervis (the latter the sister of the first Viscount St Vincent).

2. William Hopetoun Carnegie, Baron of Rosehill, son of William Earl of Northesk matriculated Christ Church Oxford 28/01/1813 aged 18; 8th Earl of Northesk, died 05/12/1878.

3. In 1851, William Earl of Northesk was living with his family at Longwood House, Owlesbury (near Winchester). Longwood House had been renamed Rose Hill by Admiral William Carnegie, the 7th Earl of Northesk, who had obtained it 'by marrying the daughter of the late William Henry Ricketts Esq.'

T71/871 and T71/1378 Special Awards in Trust Westmoreland claim no. 232A & B. The second Viscount St Vincent, the uncle of John Jervis Carnegie and the Earl of Northesk, was among those awarded the other half of the compensation for Canaan, he having claimed as 'tenant-for-life of one moiety and trustee of the other half except as to four [enslaved people] of which he is owner in fee.'
