Colthurst Bateman

1771 - 2nd Aug 1859

Claimant or beneficiary

From an Irish landowning family with property around Kerry.

  1. Born in Ireland. Married Jane Sarah Gardner Kemeys [sic], dau. of John Kemeys Gardner Kemeys [who had married Sarah, daughter of Matthew Broadbelt (sic)] and grand-daughter of John Gardner Kemeys of Plantation or Plantain Garden [who died in 1793, and had taken the name Kemeys from his wife Jane]. In 1841 Colthurst Bateman aged 60 was living at Bartholey [=Bertholey] house Monmouthshire with wife Jane and 2 children, Robert 20 and  Sarah 20, and John Palairet aged 40 and Jane (née Colthurst) 25, and the Palairet children. In 1850 Colthurst Bateman was living at 2 Victoria pl Weston-super-mare and in 1851 Colthurst Bateman was living at 2 Victoria Buildings Weston-super-Mare, aged 70, 'Private gentleman' born Waterford Ireland with wife Jane S. G., aged 67 born Yorks 'Private Lady' and son Reginald, a Lt in the Royal Navy. Death of Colthurst Bateman registered Q3 1859 Sherborne Dorset; an advertisement for creditors of Colthurst Bateman late of Bertholey house Usk Monmouthshire and of Stanley Villa Weston Park Bath, gives date of death as on or around 02/08/1859 and identifies John Palairet as an executor (some genealogical sources give 03/08/1856 as the date of death but this is presumably erroneous). Colthurst Bateman left £10,000 (resworn from £5000) on his death in 1859). A Colthurst Bateman was imprisoned for debt at Taunton in 1849: a long list of addresses is given of furnished lodgings both in Britain and abroad, but also giving both 2 Victoria Place and 'Berthoby' house: it seems unlikely that this was the Colthurst Bateman of this entry, but no immediate alternative identifies itself (one of his sons was George Colthurst Bateman, who died in New York late of Jamaica in 1852).

  2. "MARRIED. On Tuesday last, at Clifton Church, by the Rev. Richard Palairet, M.A., John Gwalter Palairet, Esq., eldest son of the late John Gwalter Palairet, Esq., barrister-at-law, to Jane, eldest daughter of Colthurst Bateman, Esq., of Bertholey House, in the county of Monmouth; Bedford, in the county of Kerry and Plantain Garden River, in the island of Jamaica."

  3. Bateman was sheriff of Monmouthshire at the 1839 trial of Newport Chartists after the revolt there: Sir Nicholas Tindal was judge.

  4. The records of the Clitherow family held at the London Metropolitan Archives include a brief account of the indebtedness of the Gardner-Kemeys family.
