Biography

John Tharp, 'lunatic' grandson of John Tharp IV (d. 1804) and son of Joseph Tharp (d. 1795). John Tharp the younger's estate, including 10 estates in Jamaica and the compensation for the enslaved people upon them, was bound up in Chancery until 1863.

  1. Marriage at the dwelling house of the Earl of Breadlabane at Park Lane of Rt Hon. Lady Charlotte Hay [daughter of the 7th Marquess of Teewdale]  and John Tharp 01/06/1815, license recorded at St George Hanover Square.

  2. The uncle of John Tharp the younger (John Tharp the elder, q.v., under John Tharp VI) lived at and managed Chippenham Park.

  3. Although Burke's reportedly gives a date of death of 02/08/1863, the John Tharp who died on that date was clearly unconnected. The most likely date of death is 26/01/1883, the John Tharp widower of The Palace Much Hadham, the administration of whose estate was granted to Frederick Moore Smith, MD a creditor 29/08/1883, effects £935 19s 4d. John Tharp was certainly alive on the administration of his wife's estate on 13/06/1878 (she had died in 1876).  The 1841 census shows John Tharp aged 45 at Much Hadham Lunatic Asylum. The Palace at Much Hadham served as a lunatic asylum 1816-1868. John Tharp, born 10/05/1794 died 26/01/1883 aged 88 and was buried at Much Hadham.
