London merchant (under his own name) and MP, son of Sir Michael Shaw Stewart the 5th bart., and brother of the 6th. Agent for Tobago in the 1830s ; prominent member of the West India Committee. Maxwell Stewart one of the directors of the Marine Insurance Co., which appeared briefly in the mid-1840s, Palladium Life established in the 1820s and of The British American Land Company (1834- ). The 4th Bt. succeeded to the Greenock estates on the death of his great-uncle Sir John Shaw of Greenock, 3rd and last Bt., in 1752 and assumed the additional surname of Shaw. Later MP for Renfrewshire from 1780-1783 and 1786-1796. The 5th Bt. Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire 1822-1825. The 6th Bt., Michael Shaw-Stewart, MP for Lanarkshire 1827-1830 and Renfrewshire 1830-1837. The 7th Bt., Colonel Sir Michael Robert Shaw-Stewart (26 November 1826–10 December 1903), MP for Renfrewshire from 1855-1865 and Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire between 1869-1903. He was also Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland from 1873 to 1882.
The History of Parliament shows him dying at Carnock, Stirlingshire; the Patrick Maxwell Shaw Stewart whose death was registered at Croydon Q3 1846 was the twelve year old son of Capt. Houston Stewart, killed at Beddington Park in a shooting accident.

Will of Patrick Maxwell Stewart merchant of Finsbury Circus proved 16/11/1846. Under the will, he left his entire estate except for Charlotteville in Tobago to trustees to liquidate, and with the money to withhold £8000, and divide the remainder equally between his brother Houston Stewart RN and the children of his late brother John Shaw Stewart, who also received the £8000. Charlotteville he left to Houston Stewart for his lifetime and then to 'his son Patrick Maxwell Stewart my name son [sic].'
Patrick Maxwell Stewart, MP, of 6 Great Winchester Street, had four votes as a proprietor of the British American Land Company in 1835 so had purchased at least 50 shares at £50 each.
