Biography

London solicitor, awarded part of the compensation for the enslaved people at Kings Bay in Tobago as owner, counterclaimed as administrator for Nathaniel Mason of Tobago, mortgagee, supposed amount £30,000 on Shirvan in Tobago, and almost certainly the same Nathaniel Mason who appears as a trustee or similar in two separate awards in Jamaica.

  1. The legal partnership of Nathaniel Mason with John and Nathaniel Bridges at 23 Red Lion Square was dissolved in 1856.

  2.  In 1841 Nathaniel Mason attorney-at-law was living at Compton Terrace Islington with wife Harriet aged 36 and children Harriet 7, John [?] B. 6, Mary 4 Frances 3 Lancelot 2 and Jemima 1, with 5 servants. In 1851 Nathaniel Mason attorney and solicitor aged 53 born Coventry was at 17 Compton Terrace with wife Harriet and children Nathaniel 23 articled clerk to solicitor, Henry 22 surveyor, Edward 21 law student, Mary, Frances, Alice 6 and Frederick 2. By 1861 he was living aged 63 at 34 Clifton Gardens, with wife Harriet and daughters Mary, Frances and Jemima. Letters of Administration for Nathaniel Mason of 34 Clifton Gardens Maida Hill Solicitor who died 12/1/1862 were granted to Harriet Anne Mason widow the relict 12/2/1862, effects under £1000 resworn at £6000 July 1862.

  3. Nathaniel Mason's entitlement to the compensation was connected with the Nathaniel Mason merchant of the island of Tobago whose will was proved 13/3/1802. However Nathaniel Mason the awardee was born in Coventry, according to the 1851 and 1861 censuses.
