???? - 1859
London insurance broker. Ellis Ellis 'of Lloyd's' counterclaimed for slave-compensation as mortgagee of the enslaved people in Grenada claims Nos. 862 and 863. To date no death-date or will has been definitively found for him, but he appears very likely to have been the Ellis Ellis Esq. who died at Bath in 1859 leaving £70,000.
Ellis Ellis also appears in Trinidad 1345 as one of the trustees of Inglis Ellice. It is likely but not certain that the two are the same man.
[Andrew] Ellis Ellis of Lloyd's (born Andrew Ellis de Vezian) was the father of William Ellis (1800-1881), the founder of the Birkbeck Schools and long-running manager of the Indemnity Marine Assurance Co., of which his father was a founding-director. The baptism record for William Ellis (1800-1881) shows his father simply as Ellis Ellis and his mother as Sophia. William Ellis left £160,000 at his death in 1881.
Ellis Ellis, with father's name given as Andrew Vezian, married Caroline Scott (whose father was transcribed as 'Paul Conagles') at Rickmansworth Hertfordshire in 1840. Caroline Antoinette Ellis died in 1874 and was buried at Walcot St Swithin, where Ellis Ellis had been buried 25/02/1859 aged 92. Caroline Antoinette Colnaghi had previously married John Scott in London. In 1851 Ellis Ellis 'fundholder' and Caroline Ellis were 'visitors' at 13 Pall Mall East, with another visitor, Francesca Colnaghi, and several servants. The evidence thus appears clear that Ellis Ellis of Lloyd's was the same man as the man shown as dying at Bath in 1859 formerly of Richmond Surrey, whose will was proved by a son, Charles Ellis of Carlton Villas Kilburn: although no birth-record for Charles Ellis as a son of Ellis Ellis of Lloyd's has been found to date, in the 1861 census Charles Ellis of Carlton Villas aged 60 born Marylebone was shown as an underwriter at Lloyd's.
