Biography

Awarded the compensation for thirteen enslaved people on Barbados under two separate awards.

  1. Will of Ann Hinds, widow of St Michael Island of Barbados [about to leave for England] [made in 1828] proved 14/05/1840. Her will identifies her as the widow of Benjamin Hinds. She said she had over £16,000 secured by judgements due from her sons Thomas Maxwell Hinds and Benjamin Hinds, and she left this among her children, including the two men themselves. Mrs Ann Hinds of Westcott near Dorking Surrey aged 70 was buried at All Souls Kensal Green 01/11/1839 by Samuel Hinds, vicar of Yardley Hertfordshire. Samuel Hinds was the son of Abel of Barbados, BA Queens Oxford 1815, principal of Codrington Hall and later bishop of Norwich 1849-1857.

  2. Mother of Benjamin Hinds (q.v.) who in 1861 aged 59 Gentleman and fund holder born Barbados with wife Julia aged 45 born Surrey, and daughters Ann 23 born Dorking and Rose M. 17 born Kingston, was living at Claremont Road Kingston. Possibly also the sister or daughter, and residuary legatee, of James Maxwell merchant of Barbados (q.v.).
