London merchant, born in Barbados, the son of Eliezer Montefiore, and a partner with his brother Joseph Barrow Montefiore (q.v., under Joseph Montefiore). Their London firm failed in 1842.
The Montefiore brothers were active in the early colonisation of Australia. The partnership between Jacob Montefiore and Leslie Jacob Montefiore, trading under the style of Jacob Montefiore and Co., at Melbourne, Victoria, dissolved 01/06/1855.
Jacob Montefiore appears in all censuses between 1841 and 1891, (with his wife Justina between 1851 and 1881) living mainly in London, at [24] Tavistock Square, 7 Lower Belgrave Street, 12 Brunswick Square Hove, and most latterly at 35 Hyde Park Square. Their daughter Violet was born in Melbourne c. 1854. Montefiore died 03/11/1895 in London, effects £1843 6s resworn December 1896 at £2001 7s 2d.
