Co-heir with siblings William John Codrington and Caroline Codrington of their uncle Christopher Bethell, who left them the Room estate on Antigua and the enslaved people on it. Descendant of the 'old Codrington family of Dodington, Gloucestershire' according to the ODNB and the third son of Edward Codrington (1732–1775) of London and his wife, Anne [other sources give Rebecca] née Sturgeon. Grandson according to the ODNB of Sir Edward [in fact William] Codrington, first baronet.

Naval officer 1783-1842. As commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean defeated the Turks at the Battle of Navarino, 1827 which assured victory for the Greeks but led to political controversy at home.

27 December 1802 Codrington married Jane (d. 22 Jan 1837), daughter of Jasper Hall of Kingston, Jamaica; three sons and two daughters. Sons included Sir William John Codrington (1804-1884), army officer, and Sir Henry John Codrington (1808-1877), naval officer. [Both have entries in the Oxford DNB.] Eldest daughter, Jane Barbara, married Captain Sir Thomas Bourchier (superintendent of Chatham Dockyard; d. 1849). She published her Memoir of her father in 1873.
