Biography

London West India merchant, awarded a share (with David and Benjamin Hopkinson) of the compensation for the enslaved on Bachelors Adventure and Enterprise in British Guiana, which had belonged to John Hopkinson (q.v.), almost certainly his father, and counterclaiming as a mortgagee on Plantation John Cove and Craig Miln, again with Elizabeth, Benjamin and David Hopkinson.

  1. 1841 census shows him at Chester Square born abroad, abt. 1816 aged 25 merchant, with Elizabeth born in England aged 35. 1851 census shows him at 55 Chester Square merchant born Demerara (about 1811) aged 40 married to Elizabeth (aged 45), with Jonathan's sister Eliza (born Demerara, aged 41); 1871 at 19 Calverley Park in Tonbridge aged 56 'income from dividends' born Demerara with wife Emily Elizabeth and 2 young children; 1881 Greenwood Lodge Frant Green Sussex. Death of Jonathan Hopkinson aged 67 registered 1882 Ticehurst (Kent, Sussex). He left £26192 14s 11d (resworn from £21266 14s at probate).

  2. He was shown as late of Grosvenor Place but now of No. 19 Calverley Park Tunbridge Wells as executor to Benjamin Hopkinson of The Oaks, Ambleside County of Westmoreland in an advertisment for creditors of Benjamin Hopkinson (who died 15/09/1868). Benjamin Hopkinson (q.v.), born Demerara c. 1810, was Jonathan's brother: he left £35,000.

T71/885 British Guiana no. 568A, where is given as 'Jona.' This could conceivably be Jonas but Jonathan appears more probable. However, Jonathan Hopkinson is also shown as a counterclaimant on the same award.
