London merchant, co-awardee (with Alexander Gordon (q.v.)) for a part-share in the compensation for 180 enslaved in Dominica, as a trustee. Tentative identification as also the David Alexander Maitland of Barcaple, son of David Maitland and Grace Gordon, who died in Ceylon in 1846.
The firm of Gordon and Maitland, a partnership between Harry George Gordon and David Alexander Maitland as colonial brokers of 22 Mincing Lane, was dissolved 12/11/1835. David Alexander Gordon was given as of Mincing Lane in the compensation award.
Birth of David Alexander Maitland 29/05/1807 in London, parents David Maitland and Grace Gordon (who married in Scotland 16/05/1804). Monumental inscription at Tongland Kirkyard, Kirkcudbright, Scotland: "Grace Gordon, relict of David Maitland Esq., died at Luddington, Surrey, 29th November 1847, aged 82 years. David Alexander Maitland Esq., of Barcaple, their only son, died at Colombo, Ceylon, the 19th of July 1846, in the 40th year of his age." Death 17/07/1846: "At Colombo, Ceylon, on the 19th July, from an enlargement of the heart, David Alexander Maitland, Esq., of Barcaple."
