John W. Bovell

Probably John William Bovell, son of Dr John Bovell and Rebecca Braithwaite Alleyne, and apparently half-brother to John Bovell, John Roach Bovell and Michael Nihell Bovell of British Guiana (q.v.).

1. John William Bovell 4th son of John Bovell of Island of Barbadoes Doctor; matriculated Oriel College Oxford 18/03/1830 aged 18. Death of John William Bovell registered Q4 1847 Gloucester.

2. Will of Rebecca Brathwaite [sic] Bovell widow of Clifton, Bristol Gloucestershire proved 04/05/1846.

3. A daughter of John William Bovell, Ellen Rebecca (born 25/10/1840) was baptised 27/01/1841 at St George the Martyr Queens Square.

T71/896 Barbados claim no. 1133; Stephen Ferguson, 'West Indian Medical graduates of Edinburgh to 1800' Journal of the History of Med. and Allied Sci., Vol. XXIX, Number 1 pp. 111-140. 4. There is potential confusion between the deaths of John Bovell the father and John William Bovell the son in Stephen Ferguson's article. The John William Bovell dying in 1847 was certainly the son of Rebecca Braithwaite Bovell.
