1783 - 1867
Samuel Hibbert (1783-1867) was the son of Samuel Hibbert (1752-1786) and Mary Greenhalgh. Samuel’s father died in Nantes in France leaving his wife to raise their four children. In 1808 Samuel married his cousin Caroline Hibbert, the daughter of George Hibbert M.P. (1757-1837).
Samuel was involved extensively with the Hibbert family merchant houses and was a partner in both the firms Geo, Rob., Wm. & Sam. Hibbert, first listed in Kent’s Directory in 1811 and in G. W. & S. Hibbert listed in 1820. Samuel was involved with the West India Dock Company and acted as both the Chairman and as Director. Samuel was a Director of the Imperial Life Insurance Company and the Imperial Fire Assurance Company serving at different times between 1831 and 1858. Samuel was also appointed as a Director of the Bank of England five times between 1820 and 1833. On his death in 1867 Samuel left £90,000 in personalty.
