Son of Admiral William Carnegie and Mary Ricketts, awarded with his brother the Earl of Northesk (q.v.) the compensation for half the Canaan estate in Westmoreland Jamaica as trustee for Viscount St Vincent.

Death registered for John Jervis Carnegie aged 84 Q1 1892 Midhurst Sussex. Probate for Honourable John Jervis Carnegie of Fair Oak Sussex who died 18/01/1892 granted 15/03/1892, effects £122468 5s 9d.

Rose Hill, Owslebury near Winchester, the address given for John Jervis Carnegie on his wedding in 1836, was the name given to the former Longwood House by Admiral William Carnegie, the 7th Earl of Northesk, who had obtained it 'by marrying the daughter of the late William Henry Ricketts Esq.' The name Longwood stuck: in 1851 the 8th Earl of Northesk is shown at Longwood House with his family.
From the 1851 census onwards, John J. Carnegie and his household are is shown at Fair Oak House, Rogate Sussex.
T71/871 and T71/1378 Westmoreland No. 232A; the latter identifies him as of Rose Hill, Southampton. The uncle of John Jervis Carnegie and the Earl of Northesk, the second Viscount St Vincent, was among those awarded the other half of the compensation for Canaan, he having claimed as 'tenant-for-life of one moiety and trustee of the other half except as to four [enslaved people] of which he is owner in fee.'
