Biography
Colonial judge, dying in London in 1889: he was acting as court-appointed representative of the deceased mortgagee in the award for which he appears as receiving compensation, and does not appear to have been a slave-owner himself. He gave evidence at the 1832 Select Committee on the Extinction of Slavery.
- Will of Herbert Townsend Bowen late Puisne Judge of the Island of Trinidad died at 11 Carlton Road Maida Vale 30/09/1889 [aged 83], probate 30/11/1889 to his son Arthur John Bowen solicitor, effects £417 3s 10d. His life-dates are tentative: Herbert Townsend Bowen was baptised at St Mary Rotherhithe 28/11/1805, which is consistent with an age of 83 given at death, but a Herbert Robert Townshend Bowen was also baptised at the same church with the same parents 04/03/1812.
