Biography

John Smith the youngest, Glasgow bookseller (1784-1849), executor of Francis Brown [his brother-in-law], son of John Smith, younger (1753-1833) and grandson of John Smith of Finnieston (1724-1814).

  1. Appears in the compensation records as 'John Smith junior'. As the executor of Francis Brown of Jordanhills Trinidad (d. c. 1825), however, he was identified as 'John Smith the youngest' in 1829 (before his father's death), and this is how he appears in the ODNB.

  2. Left estate (£10,000) to his niece Mary, the daughter of Francis Brown of Trinidad and Smith's sister, Elizabeth.
