Joseph Christopher Ewart

Given in Parliamentary Papers as John Christopher Ewart. Partner in Ewart Myers (q.v.) and with his partners awarded the compensation for Long Lane Delap's estate in Antigua as mortgagees-in-trust.

1. Son of William Ewart of Liverpool merchant, nephew of Joseph Ewart, and younger brother of William Ewart (1798-1869), the MP for Liverpool 1830-37, Wigan 1839-1841 and Dumfries 1841-1868. Joseph Christopher Ewart himself was MP for Liverpool 1855-1865. William Ewart senior was godfather of William Ewart Gladstone; William junior was an 'advanced' Liberal and father of Mary Anne Ewart (1830–1911), an advocate of higher education for women: she was a benefactor and governor of Newnham College, Cambridge, Somerville College, Oxford, and Bedford College, London.

2. Will of Joseph Christopher Ewart who died 14/12/1868 at Broadleas near Devizes in Wilts proved 18/01/1869 by nephews Henry Rutson and Albert Osliff Rutson both of Newby Wiske near Northallerton, effects under £180,000.

3. 'American, East india and general merchant' in Liverpool. 'His firm was presumably Ewart Myers & Co.' Son of William Ewart (1763-1823). Director of P&O and of London and Northern Railway Company. Left £180,000 on his death.

4. A short obituary for Joseph Christopher Ewart appeared in the Liverpool Daily Post 16/12/1868. The article's author refers to him as 'the venerable deceased.' A more lengthy obituary appeared in the following day's edition of the same paper.
