Joseph Trotman, son of Thomas Clarke Trotman of Bulkeley, Valley and Carmichael estates (for whom he was co-awardee as joint heir) and Ann Trotman née Hamilton; brother of Ann Trotman junior and Simon Lee Trotman; brother-in-law of William Drake Sealy (all q.v.).
Born in Barbados to Thomas Clarke Trotman and Ann Trotman née Hamilton, matriculated Worcester College, Oxford, 24/10/1822, age 18; B.A. 1827, M.A. 1829, admited to the Inner Temple, 1833.
Married Susanna Bradshaw, daughter of Thomas William and Frances Bradshaw, 22/04/1835. They had nine children. Susanna was ward of George Hewitt who bequeathed Warren's and Cane Garden plantations to her. She died in childbirth, 22/04/1852 age 37.
In Barbados for the christening of his first son George Hewitt Trotman in 1836 but in Clifton, Gloucestershire for the births and christenings of his two eldest daughters Ellen Louisa and Josephine in 1837 and 1838. Back in Barbados for the births of his remaining known children Frederic Hamilton (1840), Edward Perch (1843), Susan Frances Hinds (1844), Ann Hamilton (1846), William Hinds Forte (1848) and Sarah Isabella (1850).
Named as a director of the West India Bank in 1839.
Found in only one British census, of 1861, living at 16 Henrietta Street, Bath, a widower, age 56, "Fundholder", born Barbados, with his daughters Ellen age 23 and Josephine age 22 and his son William age 13. Also living at the same address are three sisters, "Lodging Hse Keepers" and one female servant.
Died at 22 Pulteney Street, Bristol, 21/12/1868. Will proved 12/10/1869 by William Clark Trotman (his brother and one of his executors). Effects under £600. However, through his wife's inheritance from George Hewitt, he also owned Warren's plantation which he left to his daughters, and Cane Garden which he left to his sons.
