Biography

  1. Probably John Allen Powell, lawyer. Powell was born in Jamaica in about 1781 though he was in Britain by 1806 practising as a lawyer. His chambers were at 9 New Square, Lincoln's Inn. He formed a partnership with Francis and William Broderip and George Wilde, which lasted from 1806 to his death in 1859. He is recorded at 2 Hill Street, Berkeley Square, St George, Hanover Square Parish, Middlesex in the 1841 Census, where he is also described as a solicitor.

  2. He died at Foster's, Hendon, Middlesex, 6 September 1859. His addresses at the time of his death were 9 New Square, Lincoln's Inn and 7 George Street, Hanover Square, Middlesex.

  3. He was the attorney for George IV at the trial of Queen Caroline, 1820.

  4. There are two portraits of John Allen Powell in the National Portrait Gallery.
