Biography

Robert Chaloner MP for Richmond 1810-18 and York 1820-26, awarded the compensation with Abel Rous Dottin, John Pollard Mayers and Henry Walker Yeoman (each of whom q.v.) as trustees of the marriage settlement of his sister Caroline Cumberbatch for the Cleland and Farm estates in Barbados.

  1. The marriage settlement under which Robert Chaloner was co-trustee was between Caroline Chaloner and Abraham Parry Cumberbatch and was dated 10/04/1819; it secured Caroline Cumberbatch née Chaloner for life an annual sum of £356.

  2. Robert Chaloner was born 23/09/1776, the son of William Chaloner and Emma Harvey. Married Frances Laura Dundas, daughter of Thomas Dundas 1st Baron Dundas of Aske and Lady Charlotte Fitzwilliam on 24/01/1805. Died 07/10/1842.

  3. Robert Chaloner a partner with Godfrey Wentworth Wentworth in the York banking house of Wentworth, Chaloner and Rishworth. Bankrupted in the financial crisis of 1825-6. His cousin, the Earl of Fitzwilliam, helped to save his Yorkshire property and also appointed him steward of his 85,000 acre estate of Coolattin, Ireland. On the Irish estates Chaloner a prime mover in land clearances and the forced emigration of ‘surplus’ peasant families. His descendants included, among his great-grandchildren, Walter Long, 1st Viscount Long (1854-1924) and Richard Chaloner, 1st Baron Gisborough (1856-1938). Walter Long was a leading Unionist politician (including as leader of the Unionists, 1905-1910), Britain’s Chief Secretary of Ireland (1905) and held numerous other government offices. Richard Chaloner (who changed his name to Chaloner to inherit Guisborough), was Conservative MP for Westbury 1895-1900 and for Liverpool Abercromby 1910-1917.
