Biography

Thomas Sutton Taylor Ibbott was born 22/06/1802 and baptised in Kingston 06/01/1803. He was the son of Mary Carter, a "quadroon", by Thomas Ibbott.

Thomas Ibbott, his father, was born 28/05/1774 and baptised 01/02/1775. He was the son of Thomas and Mary Ibbott, and a brother of Alice Pierce Ibbott, the wife of Bartholomew Owen Williams.

Thomas Ibbott died “on or about 8th January 1842”. In his Will, dated 2nd November 1822, he named his son, Thomas Sutton Taylor Ibbott, as sole executor “to whom Probate was granted …. 26th September 1842.” In the Will, Thomas Ibbott’s sister, Sarah Elizabeth Frank (m/s Ibbott born 18/10/1773 and baptised the same day as Thomas), and his two daughters, Mary Ann Ibbott and Elizabeth Ibbott, were also named.

Mary Ann Ibbott was possibly the “mulatto child slave of Mrs Jackson” who was baptised aged 18 months on 03/08/1797, along with Elizabeth Jane Ibbott, a free black woman, aged 26 years – possibly her mother.

Elizabeth Ibbott, a mulatto child, aged 4 years, was baptised 06/01/1803 in Kingston (the same day as Thomas Sutton Taylor Ibbott).

In the Monumental Inscriptions for Kingston, there is an inscription for Miss Jane Lucretia Ibbott, who died 12/06/1808, “in the 9th year of her age …. erected by her father" (many verses follow). Jane Lucretia Ibbott, the daughter of Mary Carter, a quadroon, by Thomas Ibbott, was born 25/04/1800 and baptised 02/10/1800 in Kingston Parish.

Possibly the father of five children born in the 1820s. Mary Jane Ibbott born 18/04/1823 and Thomas Sympson Ibbott born 21/07/1824, children of Elizabeth Brown, a free person of color (sic) by T H Ibbott, were baptised in Kingston Parish on 11/12/1824. (T H Ibbott may have been a transcription or information error). Jane Ibbott, free of col (sic) born 03/08/1825; baptised 02/09/1825, Kingston Parish. Julia Rosa Ibbott born 12/07/1828; baptised 06/12/1829, Kingston, coloured; to Thomas Ibbott and Ann Miller, Lombard Street, not married. Frances Lucretia Ibott (sic) 17/09/1829 (birth or baptism) Kingston to Thomas Sutton Taylor Ibott (sic) and Anne Ibott (sic).

Mary Carter Ibbott, a "free quadroon", aged 52 years, who was baptised in Kingston Parish 12/03/1874, was possibly a relative and may have been the daughter of Thomas Sutton Taylor Ibbott.

Thomas Sutton Taylor Ibbott aged 79, married, landlord, died at 9 Barry Street, Kingston on 14/03/1881. His death was registered by his son-in-law, Mr Morais, of the same address. Ann Ibbott, the widow of Thomas Ibbott, property owner, died aged 89, 15th May 1898 at High Holborn Street, Kingston. Her death was registered by her nephew, Charles Daniel Androuin (spelling?) of 87 Barry Street, Kingston.
