Thomas Sweetland

Attorney in Jamaicain the 1820s and 1830s; later a surveyor. Purchased Mount Prospect in Manchester, Jamaica, jointly with William Gunter (q.v.) at some point between 1832 and 1834.

1. No baptism has been found for Thomas Sweetland in Jamaica. At some point before 1849, he married Ellen (surname unknown, possibly Hungerford). They had seven children baptised in Manchester: Edmond Hungerford (1849), Henrietta Eliza (1853), Charles Joseph (1855), Julia Louisa (1856), Eve Antoinette (1857), Arthur Augustus Leopold (1859), Thomas Albert (1861). His occupation was given as surveyor at each baptism. Abode Salisbury, Manchester, and later Asia, Manchester.

2. One of the managers of the Manchester Bank for Savings in 1839; Assistant Judge or Magistrate in Manchester in 1851; Magistrate in Manchester in 1857; Magistrate in 1861 but off the island.

3. No death has been found for Thomas Sweetland (a labourer of the same name died in 1879 aged 78 years but this seems an unlikely match). Ellen Sweetland, widow, age 94 years, living at Asia, Manchester, died in 1922.
