Biography

James Torrent Godfrey, Joseph Torrent Godfrey, William Bean Godfrey, George Godfrey and Henry Godfrey were trust beneficiaries (with a number of different guardians) for Pontefract/Look Out estates in Westmoreland, Jamaica, from at least 1820 until Emancipation. The enslaved people were aquired from William Godfrey and removed from the parish of Hanover between 1817 and 1820.

  1. James Godfrey, "quadroon free" born 03/12/1804 and baptised 16/03/1805 in Hanover. William, "a quadroon about 5 years" and Ann, "a quadroon aged about 4 years", children of Elizabeth Torrent "a free mulatto woman", baptised in Hanover, 30/09/1809. George Godfrey, 8 months old, son of William Godfrey Esquire of Pontifract, Hanover, and Elizabeth Tarrant, a free woman of colour of the same parish, baptised in Westmoreland 03/02/1816.
