Partner in Robert Eccles & Co., and then Eccles Burnley (q.v.). The Eccles firms failed c. 1848, after which John Ronald made an offer of composition for the whole debt of the firm at 7s 10d in the pound.
In the 1861 census John Ronald West India merchant aged 64 born in Auchinleck was at 230 Renfrew Street with his children.
The John Ronald merchant of Glasgow whose daughter Agnes married in 1816 Alexander Johnston (MP for Kilmarnock Burghs and merchant in Glasgow, who bought Shield Hall in 1838) must have been a different man.
