Biography

Son of Nathaniel and Mary Cave of Christchurch, Barbados. Married first Angel Perkins Thorpe, 7/3/1816, with whom he had two children: Lucy (b. 1817) and Frances (b. 1824). On 17/11/1828 he married secondly, Isabella Carr Wharton. Together they had four children, three born in Barbados – Robert (b. 1830), Isabella (b. 1832), and James (b. 1833, who died before his first birthday) - and one in England - Clara (b. 1841). In 1829 he purchased the 218 acre Stirling Plantation in Barbados for approximately £11,000 and the Lightfoots estate for £14,285 in 1837. The family returned to Britain sometime during the late 1830s.

In 1841 Nathaniel Cave aged 44 and his wife Isabella were living at 31 Caledonia Place Clifton with five children the youngest of whom (aged 3 or 5 was born in Clifton).

The draft marrige settlement of his second daughter Frances to Rev. Vernon G. Yonge in 1848 included reference to a "sugar work plantation called Maynards in the Island of Barbados." Nathaniel Cave's son Rev. Robert Haynes Cave married Yonge's sister Elizabeth Vernon Yonge in Repton, Derbyshire in 1854. They were the children of Weston Yonge (1788-1849) of Charnes Hall, Eccleshall, Staffordshire.

Letters of administration granted for the estate of Nathaniel Cave, formerly of the parish of St Philip Barbados but lately of Bolas Rectory Salop who died 08/08/1861 granted 15/10/1863 to Rev. Robert Haynes Cave of Lydgate Rectory, effects under £3000. In the 1861 census, Nathaniel Cave had been living with his wife Isabella at Ventnor, Isle of Wight.
