With his brother George Duncan Gittens (q.v.), awarded the compensation for seven enslaved people in Barbados in two separate awards.

  1. Son and heir of John Hamlet Gittens, R. of St John's, Barbados [q.v.]. Born, St Philip, Barbados.
    Admitted as a 'pensioner' to Pembroke College, Cambridge, 13 February 1830. Re-admitted, 11 June 1833. Probably of Applewhites, Barbados. His 2nd son, the Rev. Forster Clarke Gittens, was admitted to Oxford University in 1871. (Alumni Oxon.) Apart from his time at Cambridge, Gittens appears to have lived his whole life in Barbados.
    He and his wife, Ellen Hinds Clarke (c.1820-1902), had 18 children. For a full list see the Gittens family history website.
